Tall Personal Shopping: Day to Night Dress for Vacation

Client: 6’0″ women

Size: 6, 36″ inseam

Budget: $50

Request: My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Washington DC this summer.  I’d like a tall summer dress that I can wear during the day while sightseeing but that can be dressed up for an evening out.:

Tall Snob Responds:

I love this request! It’s very realistic- when you travel you don’t want to over pack so it’s important that clothing items pull double duty.  In addition $50 is a reasonable price for a day time dress (though magazines would have you believe that $150 is “normal.” Don’t you hate that?!).  I probably should have requested the client’s age for a more specific search but here’s what I came up with (and keep reading for some tips on taking dresses from day to night!). All dresses are under $50, with many falling under $40.

Other than the dress on the top right, I consider these dresses ultra feminine in style.  The top right is a bit more classic with its shape and navy and white stripes.

Tips for Taking Dresses from Day to Night:

-wear lighter, brighter jewelry during the day, heavier jewelry (with bling if that’s your style!) at night; also less jewelry during the day (which kind of happens naturally right?) and more at night.

-flats, “cute sneakers,” or flip flops are casual, while wedges, heels, or metallic sandals are great for a night out.

-add a blazer, cardigan, shawl, or scarf for a night out.  If layers are needed during the day (probably not in DC!), wear a denim jacket or even a high end hoodie.

– depending on your hairstyle and the occasion, putting your hair up in a pretty bun or top knot can make a dress seem more appropriate for an evening out.

– little or “natural” makeup is great for sightseeing during the day while you might go a bit more glam (think smokey eyes with nude lips, or shimmery shadow with red lips) at night.

I hope that helps you! Have fun in DC!  For the rest of you- How do you take a dress form day to night?! I would love to hear your tips!
